On Friday, September 28th, PechaKucha Night Cleveland will be live and the German beer will be flowing at Sachsenheim Hall on Denison Avenue in Cleveland's Stockyards neighborhood. We can’t imagine a better time to celebrate creativity in a German Beer Hall than the middle of Oktoberfest!
...
Japanese for “the sound of conversation,” PechaKucha Night events features a succession of 8-10 speakers, each sharing new ideas about topics ranging from visual art, architecture, and technology to food, film, music, photography and furniture design through a vibrant 400 second long presentation (20 slides X 20 seconds each).
Stuart had planned to be out of town in September 2018, but a change in plans brought him home early, allowing us both to attend PechaKucha Night Cleveland - Volume 32 (@PKNCLE - #PKNCLE32) on Friday, September 28, 2018. We always enjoy both attending PechaKucha Night Cleveland events, and writing blog posts about them!!
The speakers for the evening included:
-
Joan Miller-Malue had to cancel, so another representative of the Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons spoke about the organization.
OUR MISSION
The Alliance of Transylvanian Saxons was organized as a fraternal benefit society to unite persons of Transylvanian Saxon and German descent, and others who agree to support the preservations of the Saxon culture and traditions, in an organization that provides financial security to members through the sale of life insurance and annuities while providing fraternal fellowship through social and cultural events.

Kevin "Mr Soul" Harp (@MisterSoul216)
Kevin “mr. soul” Harp has been a member of the artistic worldsince a very young age. Growing up in Cleveland he learned to not let anythingturn him away from his purpose. After moving to Atlanta, he has made a name for himself as one of the most sought after graphic artists around. He still adheres to what his childhood taught him, that the only person stopping anyone from achieving anything they want is themselves. Now as an experienced businessman, his life speaks to perseverance, faith in oneself, and proves that the gifts you’re born with never leave you. In his case his gifts are expanding and changing the art and graphic design world one project at a time.
-
Lennie Stover (@LennieStover) - Red Line Greenway
The Red Line Greenway is a concept for a nearly three mile multi-purpose trail and greenspace corridor which would run parallel to The Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority's (RTA's) Red Line rapid transit tracks from Zone Recreation Center at West 65th Street, through Detroit Shoreway, Ohio City, and into downtown Cleveland. Along the way it would connect with the Stockyards neighborhood, Tremont, and the Flats as it connects directly with LAND studio's Lake Link Trail, the Towpath Trail and the new Rivergate Park and future Cleveland Skate Park.

Learn more about Djapo Cultural Arts' "joyful and exuberant" drums and dance performance on June 1, 2018, at the Cleveland Museum of Art (@ClevelandArt) #MIXatCMA in our blog post: From African Dance to Bluegrass MusicIn preserving traditional dance and music throughout Africa and the Diaspora, our goal is to educate, enrich, and motivate individuals to create positive images of family and self while incorporating valuable experiences that promote healthy lifestyles and community healing through stage performances, workshops, communal gatherings, international travel, and cultural exposure.
- George Hahn (@GeorgeHahn) and
- Amy Eddings (@aeddings - @WCPN), Host/Producer, Ideastream 90.3 WCPN
spoke about their podcast: The Downtowner (@DownTownerCast)Downtown Cleveland is now home to 15,000 residents. Is this new interest in living downtown a blip, or does it have legs? ideastream's Amy Eddings and lifestyle blogger George Hahn, both Downtowners, engage the curious at the intersection of Urban Policy and Lifestyle in this podcast.

THE ORPHANAGE OF THINGS
A narrative of abandonment
ABSTRACTIn Sudan, 110 babies are abandoned in the streets of Khartoum every month. The majority of abandoned children are born out of wedlock (UNICEF 2003). Young women with illegitimate pregnancies are often ostracized by their families and society, and the lack of emotional, financial and legal support has led many to take desperate measures, including the abandonment of their children.
Relinquishing mothers exist like ghosts in Sudanese society. The only evidence of the mother’s experience is her anonymous, abandoned child. In order to understand and examine this phenomenon, I used ethnographic performance art informed by design research practice (Performative Research Design). I performed various acts of abandonment to examine the mechanism and psychology of the act of abandonment.
I endeavored through concrete, lived experiences to better empathize with the relinquishing mother and create awareness of the wider psycho-social complexities of child abandonment.

Donald Black, Jr. (@DonaldBlackJr)
Donald Black Jr.
About
Simply put, I love the experience of being Black, but this shit is hard. Photography has helped me find a balance with this conflict. My inability to shake my experience has transformed photography into an obsession. There are always images in my mind that I am trying to capture. I have developed a sense of purpose and responsibility with this obsession I’ve created.
In this work, the people represent the beauty and our reality is the burden.

Michael Gill (@murkusmagurkus), Executive Director, Editor/Publisher of CAN Journal (@CAN_Journal)
We were fortunate to talk to Michael Gill during the 78th Street Studios (@78thStStudios) "THIRD FRIDAYS" free art walks. Through Michael, we learned about the 2018 inaugural CAN Triennial, which took place the same week as the opening of the inaugural FRONT International Cleveland Triennial (which we also attended -- click here for our FRONT blog posts).
From his PechaKucha Night Cleveland talk, we learned more about the CAN Journal's history and current publication.Collective Arts Network is a nonprofit organization of more than 95 art galleries, schools, and related institutions, plus individual artists. Members of CAN support and collaborate on the Northeast Ohio art scene’s own media outlets, CAN Journal and canjournal.org.
Membership in CAN is open to organizations whose main purpose and business is the exhibit, sale, or education about art in Ohio.
Membership in CAN is open to all individual artists living, working, or exhibiting in Northeast Ohio.
CAN Journal and canjournal.org provide a collective voice for galleries, organizations, and artists, as well as independent reporting and commentary on art, artists, their exhibits, and related issues.

Jessica Pinsky (@JessicaPinsk) - Praxis Fiber Workshop (@PraxisFiber)
It was interesting to learn the history of how Praxis Fiber Workshop saved the Cleveland Institute of Art's (@CleInstituteArt) floor looms, and how today they work with the Cleveland Seed Bank (@CLESeedBank) to grow their own plants for natural fibers and dyes.WHAT IS PRAXIS?
The idea for Praxis came to fruition when the Cleveland Institute of Art announced that they would be downsizing the fiber department and merging it with the existing sculpture and video departments. We proposed to take the existing fiber equipment (17 floor looms and assorted dyeing supplies) and to open a non profit fiber art center available to the CIA community and the greater Cleveland community in the revitalized arts district of Collinwood in east Cleveland. We will continue to run CIA classes in fiber there, as well as community based classes. In addition, Praxis will offer studio space for local fiber artists and a gallery to promote the field of contemporary fiber art.
