The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s

On September 27, 2017, we traveled back in time almost 100 years via the Cleveland Museum of Art's (@ClevelandArt) dazzling The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s exhibition (#CMAJazzAge). We were thrilled to attend the Media & Influencers Preview for this spectacular show.

When you go to this exhibition, please be sure to allow yourself plenty of time to fully explore it. The Jazz Age includes such an incredible variety of art and artifacts, that even after our two-hour visit, we plan to come back to see more. Ironwork, jewelry, clothing, accessories, paintings, furniture, cars, a chandelier, and other surprises -- all with an artist's flair! This exhibit is rich with the elegance of the era!

1925 Rolls-Royce Piccadily roadster Georges Chevalier designed this Baccarat crystal chandelier for the 1925 Paris exposition.

Cleveland's Rose Iron Works created this wrought iron mirror which won first prize at the Cleveland Museum of Art's 1931 May Show. Parisian artist Paul Colin captured the likeness of Josephine Baker of the Revue Nègre.

We enjoyed meeting Stephen Harrison, the Cleveland Museum of Art's curator of decorative art and design, who took time to share his insight and to answer our questions about The Jazz Age. (Read Stephen Harrison's bio here). He and Sarah D. Coffin, curator and head of product design and decorative arts at Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum (@CooperHewitt), spent years creating the exhibition, The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s.

Disclosure: We were invited by the Cleveland Museum of Art's communications department to attend the September 27, 2017, The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s Media & Influencers Exhibition Preview. We were offered free drinks and hors d'oeuvres, but elected instead to spend the full time enjoying the exhibition. We were given two admission tickets to this preview to be one of the first to view the new exhibition before it opened to the public on September 30, 2017. (We are members of the Cleveland Museum of Art, which entitles us to the benefit of attending special exhibitions for free, but the exhibition preview was beyond our membership benefits.) On Wednesday nights, the Cleveland Museum of Art (@ClevelandArt) is open late, so it is a perfect time to see The Jazz Age: American Style in the 1920s exhibition (#CMAJazzAge). Here are our tweets about our return visit on Wednesday, October 25, 2017:

 

In addition to the #CMAJazzAge exhibition, there are two other special shows occurring that we visited this fun Wednesday night. Remember that admission to the museum for these additional exhibits are free and open to all!

First was the Beyond Angkor: Cambodian Sculpture from Banteay Chhmar (#CMACambodia). It which was amazing to see these sculptures from the 12th century. Read more in the Cleveland Museum of Art members magazine Beyond Angkor article, written by the Curator of Indian and Southeast Asian Art at the Cleveland Museum of Art and Interim Curator of Islamic Art, Sonya Rhie Mace (@CMASonya).

Second was the Rodin—100 Years which is part of a worldwide #Rodin100 series of exhibits in major museums in Europe and America celebrating the centennial of Auguste Rodin’s (1840–1917) death. This exhibit was of particular interest to Stuart, since it reminded him of when he had the good fortune to visit Le Musée Rodin (@MuseeRodinParis) in Paris after studying history in a college in England. There, he remembered being fascinated by the sculpture The Gates of Hell. Rodin's The Thinker is featured within The Gates of Hell, which of course he remembered seeing at the Cleveland Museum of Art.We highly recommend you learn more by reading Rodin's The Thinker on on the Cleveland Museum of Art website.
